The loss of a beloved pair of jeans.

Hello my friends!

I bet you thought I fell off a cliff and disappeared for good, huh?  Close, but not entirely accurate!  I was in fact out in the middle of the boondocks for the past two weeks for my large animal medicine rotation.  I didn't realize this would mean little to no internet access for the entire duration of the rotation, or else I would have given ya'll the heads up!  But now I've rejoined civilization and look forward to more regular updates.

What I'm Wearing:
Shirt : Vintage (thrifted hand-me-down from sister) |  Jeans: Calvin Klein (thrifted)  |  Belt: Chiang Mai, Thailand Walking Street  |  Necklace: Don Drumm Studios   Boots:  Tractor Supply Company

This was my outfit of choice for catching up on chores around the house and running an errand or two this past Sunday - my absolute FAVORITE pair of jeans in the whole universe and a vintage peasant blouse.  Tragically, later that evening, I accidentally ripped a gigantic hole right in the knee region of one of my pant legs!  I am absolutely devastated because these are seriously the most comfortable pair of jeans I own.  RIP, dear Calvin Klein jeans!

I just started my shelter medicine and surgery rotation, which means my days will be filled with lots of spay and neuter surgeries.  It will be an absolute MIRACLE if I can make it out of this rotation without adopting another cat or dog!  Dear God, please give me the strength to say no...

Tomorrow I get to perform my first spay as primary surgeon.  I am a little freaked out, but very excited!  Wish me luck! :)

Inspiration Monday: Emma Stone, clinics, and me.

Yesterday's "Inspiration Monday" photo at Two Birds featured the lovely Emma Stone:

And here was my take on the Emma's look:

What I'm Wearing:
Cardigan: Alfani (TJ Max)  |  Shirt:  No tag (hand-me-down from sister)  |  Jeans:  House of Derreon (Macy's) |  Belt: Thrifted   |  Shoes: Thrifted  |  Earrings:  Eiffel Towers from TLC Creations

Alas, I do not have a totally rockin' blazer like Miss Stone wore in this picture, but I do have a cardigan very close to the same color to pair with a gray top.  Also alas, I was forced to take pictures inside today due to the neighbors' kids climbing all over our shared backyard, so I had a heck-of-a-time getting the colors to come out right.  Indoor pictures = stressed out Megan!  Maybe that's why my expression is so odd in all of these photos...

Well, that and because I'm pretty exhausted.  Today was my 2nd official day of clinics, and it is really wearing me out!  I'm on call all night until 8am tomorrow morning for equine emergencies, and I'm praying I don't get called in.  Emergencies do tend to be interesting cases, but I would love an evening of rest.  Hopefully I'll build up some stamina the further into clinics I get, or else this is going to be a really long year!

At least it's not raining...I LOVE working outside when the weather is gorgeous like this!  Sure beats seating inside a lecture hall for hours on end!

Now I'm off to the store to purchase a new thermometer, because mine broke today after using it on the first 5 horses.  Oops! ;)

Almost like a vacation...

The "Inspiration Monday" photo on Two Birds featured the lovely Olivia Wilde in a Maxi Dress, leather jacket, and sneakers.

My outfit didn't end up having that much in common with Miss Wilde's, other than the maxi dress and sunglasses.  For one thing, it is WAY too gorgeous and warm outside to wear a leather jacket or closed-toe shoes.  Also I'm a bit too much of a girly-girl to wear sneakers with a dress.  It looks great on Olivia, but I'm not a fan of the style on myself.

Look!  Bushes are blooming!

What I'm Wearing:
Maxi Dress:  Grass Collections (Macy's)  |  Cardigan:  Forever 21 (thrifted)  |  Shoes:  DSW

I loved pulling this maxi dress out of my closet because I typically only wear it on vacations.  This week is spring break and my LAST time off before starting clinics next Monday.  Instead of going on vacation, as many of my classmates are, I am staying in town to work on writing my MPH thesis.  So I just loved pulling on this dress because it's almost like I'm on a "staycation"!

This past weekend was actually quite a big deal because Saturday was my White Coat Ceremony!  At this event, a current veterinarian puts a white coat on a third year veterinary student, signaling their transition into their 4th year of school and first year of clinical medicine.  Wikipedia goes even further to describe it as having "a quasi-religious significance, that symbolizes a 'conversion' of a lay person into a member of the healthcare profession and is similar to a priest's ordination to priesthood."  The day was made even MORE special because my sister, who is already a veterinarian, agreed to "coat" me!  Here are a couple (really poor) cell phone photos from the event. My parents took much nicer photos with their camera, so hopefully I'll have those soon!
My sister, Kelley, "coating" me!
Ta-Da!  Starting to look like a doctor. :)

Well, back to work!  Unfortunately this thesis isn't going to write itself...

P.S. Thank you for the feedback on my last outfit!  The heels overwhelmingly won, and I totally agree with you ladies.  :)  Heels it is!

What I'm Wearing:
Cardigan: The Limited (thrifted) |  Tank top:  Thrifted (no tag)   |  Skirt:  Mossimo (thrifted)   |  Shoes:  Target

I did it!  I did it!   I am completely finished with finals, FOREVER!  Of course, this is assuming that I passed my pharmacology exam today...  It wasn't TOO awful, so hopefully that means I passed and am officially DONE with classes.  It's such a surreal, awesome feeling!

As soon as I finished my last exam I drove straight to the hair salon for a haircut.  It needed it, BADLY, and I feel SO much better now.  As you can tell in the photos, I only had a couple inches taken off and the layers cleaned up.  There's nothing like a haircut to rejuvenate and refresh you after a couple of long, hard weeks!  Plus it certainly helps that it is in the low 70's with sunshine today.  Perfect for my sunny mood!

During one of my study breaks yesterday, I stumbled on this video.  It made me smile (even through my finals week misery!), so I thought I'd share it with you guys:

I hope you are having a JOYOUS day, wherever you are! :)

What I'm Wearing:
Tank Top: Thrifted (no tag) |  Blouse:  Fortune Cookie (hand-me-down from sister)  |  Jeans:  Delia's (thrifted)  |  Boots:  Tractor Supply Company (my old riding boots)  |  Bracelet:  Gift from friend (from her travels abroad)

I'm taking a short study break to post this, as I've spent the entire day in Starbucks studying my life away for finals.  It is absolutely GORGEOUS outside, and I'm heartbroken that I've had to spend it indoors studying.

I found this old blouse the other day while organizing my closet, and decided to try pairing it with a sparkly tank top I'd picked up from the thrift store a few months ago.  I thought it made kind of an interesting color contrast, since the tank is kind of a bronze color (although it doesn't show up that well in the pics).  Nothing too special for a day spent studying!

P.S.  I hate Daylight Savings Time!  Why does it always happen during finals, so I LOSE an hour of studying? Boo!!

The first of many lasts.

You know that old saying, "when it rains, it pours"?  Unfortunately that has been my life these past few weeks, hence the limited (or non-existent) posts!  My apologies, my friends.  I'm having too much fun with this blog to abandon it entirely, so I am back with a quick outfit post!

What I'm Wearing:
Dress:  Old Navy (thrifted)  |  Belt:  Gift from friend  |  Cardigan:  Next era (thrifted)  |  Leggings:  Marshall's  |  Boots:  Thifted (similar boots here)  |  Earrings:  Eiffel towers from TLC Creations   |  Necklace:  Chiang Mai, Thailand Walking Street

It occurs to me that this outfit is pretty similar to my last outfit post.  It appears that dress + cardigan + tights + boots are one of my go-to combinations!  And of course, Abby is in her usual spot basking in the sunshine on the bed.  Smart girl. :)

I am right in the midst of my LAST week of finals EVER.  In fact, yesterday was officially my last day of classes before clinical rotations!  I NEVER thought this week would come!  :D  After being in school for literally my entire life (well, except for the first five years obviously), it is incredibly surreal to think that this is the last time I'll be taking finals.  I think I have some celebrating to do!

W is for Wide Leg

Today's challenge for "The ABC's of Style" was "W is for Wide Leg."

"Great!" I thought to myself with a smile.  After all, I wear wide leg jeans nearly every day of my life.  This should be an easy one!

So I decided to challenge myself a little bit more and chose my wide legged purple pants for today.

And I kind of think it all went downhill from there.  Because as cute as I thought this looked in person, I just couldn't seem to get it to photograph right.  I fear I may be invoking a little bit too much of the 70's with this outfit....

What I'm Wearing:
Top:  Eddie Bauer (thrifted) |  Pants:  Old Navy (hand-me-down from sister)  |  Belt:  Chiang Mai, Thailand Walking Street  |  Shoes:  Target  |  Necklace:  Hand-me-down from Grandma (Vintage)

Today I took a KILLER pharmacology exam, so my brain is completely fried.  That's why I opted for glasses today (my eyes are exhausted from studying) and the hair's in a messy bun.  I got about four hours of sleep last night, so I think it's time for a nap before I hit the books again (parasitology this time around).  It's days like today when I have to remind myself of how lucky I am in to be in vet school.  It's hard to feel thankful when you're exhausted!

Anyway, I'm not going to do perfectly on every test.  And that's OK...

In the end, it will all be worth it.

T is for Tomboy (and a Tough day)

Even though I had lots of time today to put together an outfit, I thought about sitting this one out.  Today's theme was "T is for Tomboy", and boy was it a toughie.  I'm kind of a girly girl, so it was a huge challenge to pull something together that I felt fit with the theme.  Plus today I was kind of a hot mess... you know, it was one of THOSE days.  The don't-make-me-get-out-of-bed-I-don't-wanna-go-to-school kind of day.

Anyway, for better or for worse, this was my outfit.  And do pardon my hair...it refused to obey.

Buttoned or unbuttoned?  See, I couldn't even make a simple decision today!

What I'm wearing:
Blouse:  George Stretch |  Blazer:  Lipstick  |  Jeans: Grane, Macy's   |   Scarf:  Gift from sister   |

I'm not sure I'm in love with this outfit...but oh well.  It was fun to experiment! (And seriously guys...buttoned or unbottoned?  Help a girl out here!)  Plus I'm ALWAYS looking for ideas of how to style this brown corduroy blazer.  It's one of those pieces in my closet that I haven't figured out how to wear, but I refuse to give up on.

Focusing on the positives, I guess some good things DID happen today:

1)  Milla's biopsy results came back as BENIGN.  (Milla = my sister's cat)  She is cancer-free!  Yippee!

2)  I feel like I aced my food animal exam this afternoon.  One of my tasks was...can you guess?...casting a sheep.  Even though my arms were sore from casting yesterday, I went in that sheep pen and BOOM.  Sheep cast.  That's what I'm talkin' about!

3)  I hung up new curtains in my office (where I've been taking photos since the weather has been so crappy).  I love, love, love them!  This room needed a little bit more color, and they did just the trick.

And now I have a mountain of work to tackle before I allow myself to enjoy this snowy Friday evening.  Happy Friday, everyone!

S is for Sheer...and sheep!

I am so excited to have my first GFC follower!  Thank you to Rachel for following my blog!  Now ya'll need to go check out her awesome blog because she is just lovely and has the cutest style. <3

I didn't think I would have time to participate in today's fashion challenge, but surprise! I finished class early. Today's challenge is:  "S is for Sheer"

There's Calvin, creepin' in the background...

And because it's so stinkin' cold out, a blazer is necessary when leaving my apartment...

What I'm wearing:
Shirt:  Charlotte Russe |  Blazer:  Banana Republic (thrifted)  |  Jeans:  House of Dereon   |  Shoes:  Jadd (thrifted)

I've had this shirt for forever, but always forget about it.  It was nice to have a reason to dig it out and style it up!  At first I wore a necklace with this outfit, but I decided that the intricacy of the top was such that it looked best without one (especially with my big earrings).  Sometimes less is more, don't you think?

I confess, I did not wear this outfit today... but I had a good reason!  Today was SHEEP day, meaning I was in coveralls and boots chasing sheep around in a dirty barn.  High heels and nice clothes definitely would not have been appropriate!  But I love sheep, and it was a blast "rolling around in the hay" with them today (literally!).

Fun fact about sheep: to restrain them, all you need to do is CAST them.  What is casting?  You stick one hand in their mouth and hold their jaw, use your other hand to grab just in front of their hip, and then turn the head toward the hip while lifting up on the hip.  This blog has a fantastic description with great photos of the result:

Looks silly, doesn't it?  Propped up like this you can trim their feet, draw blood, conduct a breeding soundness exam...all sorts of things!  Once in this position the sheep completely relaxes, as you can see from this photo:

It may sound like a piece of cake to cast a sheep, but for a newbie like me it was exhausting.  I am definitely going to be sore in the morning!  It doesn't matter though...I still love sheep!

P.S. The coveralls the guy in these photos is wearing are similar to what I wear when working with farm animals (except mine are blue).  Yeah...not cute at all!

Hello sunshine

What I'm wearing:
Cardigan - Kerri N Kelsey, thrifted
Gold leaf belt - thrifted
Jeans - Levi's
Shoes - Hand-me-down from sister

I can't even begin to tell you how AMAZING it is to see the sunshine!   Typically we very rarely seen the sun during the winter, so I consider every morning I wake up and see the sunshine an absolute blessing!

I've been itching to style this cardigan and belt I found at the thrift store a couple months back, and figured a lovely Sunday morning was just the time to do it.  I debated for awhile whether or not to cut the shoulder pads out of this cardigan, and eventually decided to try leaving them in.  In an attempt to balance out the structured shoulders I added this nifty golden leaf belt.  Just for fun, I also decided to try it out without the golden belt:

4
I honestly can't decide which look I like better!  One thing is for certain: this cardigan, made of soft acrylic, is NOT cat and dog fur friendly.  I had it on for 30 seconds before I found I was already covered in fur.  So I definitely will NOT be wearing this top when I start clinics in March!

I'm off to Starbucks today for an afternoon of studying.  I have two exams this week, one in Preventive Medicine (about Public Health issues such as food safety and rabies), and one in small ruminant medicine (sheep and goats...gotta love 'em!).

I'll leave you with a little vet-related humor for your weekend... ;)
Horses are such exquisitely delicate creatures.

Those blustery days of winter

1 2 3 4

I apologize for my absence, but the truth is that this hectic, crazy life I've led these past months have left me pretty uninspired in terms of fashion. It's pretty hard to find motivation to dress nicely when I end up changing into scrubs or coveralls to go traipsing about working on horses and dogs. I truly don't want to fall into the grad school trap of pulling on whatever is A) clean, and B) convenient before running out the door in the morning. Not that clean and convenient aren't important factors for dressing...they just don't always lead to the best fashion choices!

Anyway, it has been a fairly mild winter thus far, for which I am VERY thankful. Last week I spent a lot of time outdoors learning how to do basic equine medical techniques. I really like horses, but they can be very tricky to work around! Thank goodness we have all sorts of helpful drugs to sedate them. :) Aside from one minor mishap (I accidentally hit the carotid artery instead of the jugular vein when drawing blood...my bad!), it was a rather pleasant week. Next week we "tackle" cows and sheep. Hopefully it won't be too frigid cold!

Today I decided to experiment a bit with patterns. I've had this blouse for literally forever, and am always looking for new ways to wear it! I also just colored my hair last week, so it's been fun to play with outfit colors to coordinate with my new hair color.

Just a heads up for you shoe afficionados...Blowfish is having a ridiculously good sale. I've actually never bought shoes online, but have been stalking their Vance booties for awhile now. I finally took the plunge and bought them since they finally went on sale! Yippee!

What I'm wearing:
Blouse - Hand-me-down from sister
Sweater - Hand-me-down from sister
Jeans - Grane, Macy's
Boots - No idea...I've had them forever!
Belt - Chiang Mai, Thailand Walking Street

Calvin was being a camera hog when I came in from taking photos. Too bad it came out a bit blurry. :P
